PIG CLUB LITTERS ACHIEVEMENT IN WAIROA VALUE TO INDUSTRY (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Although all the returns are not yet available, the indications are that the pijg clubs in the Wairoa district are going to experience an excellent season arid that as a result there will be a big improvement in the industry here. There are five clubs in this district and completed returns have been received from two of them. In both these instances the results have been outstanding. The Awamate club's sow produced a litter of 11- pigs, which weighed 1261 b at three weeks and -4061 b at eight weeks, while the 10 pigs produced by the Wairoa club’s sow weighed 1261 bat three weeks and 4371 bat eight weeks. Both these performances are considered to be outstanding, the pigs in both cases being very even. The Kahungunu Pig Club, Nuhaka, also promises to finish its recqrding with a fine performance. 'The sires of these litters were boars provided, by Swift (New Zealand) Company, Limited, for the use of the pig clubs ffee of charge, and in providing this service it is considered that the company is doing a great deal toward assisting to raise the standard of the industry throughout the district. There is no doubt that as a result of the performances put up so far this season the industry will benefit materially. Good Work by Custodians The results also further demonstrate the value of the pig clubs to any district. The custodians, Mr. W. Richmond, Awamate, and Mr. S. Davis, Wairoa, are due for special praise for the part they have played in bringing about such good results. It is stated that it is proposed this year that all the lemales in the litters should be carried on to porker weights before they are sold to members. Previously the pigs were ballotted for and sold at eight weeks, but this has not proved to be very successful. Then? is every indication that interest in the pig industry is growing in thjs district and it is anticipated that this season’s results will provide additional encouragement to pigraisers generally. It is pointed out, however, that the district could do considerably more than it is doing in the growing of pig feed. Maize, pumpkins, carrots and crops of flint nature do well in this district and it is stated that if more attention were paid to the growing of crops such as these the industry would benefit considerably.
