CHURCHILL’S SPEECH
PRAISE IN AMERICA newspaper comment “One speech of this kind is worth batteries of heavy artillery," 'was the editorial comment of the New York Herald Tribune on Mr. Winston Churchill’s reply to Herr Hitler, which created a profound impression in America, and was relaye.d from 275 wireless stations. Expressed in common language which the people of all lands could understand, the speech was another supreme example of democratic war leadership at its best, said the Herald Tribune, conveying in clear terms the intentions of Great Britain at a moment when Herr Hitler was still .putting the finishing touches to his peace offensive. Mr. Churchill rendered it impossible for anyone to believe that any kind of peace which Herr Hitler was concocting could succeed in winning a second war without Germany .having to suffer the. pains of fighting for ■ it. The New York Times commented that no man could feel safe so long as Herr Hitler was in a position to satisfy his lust for power. Even M. Stalin must wish for his ultimate suppression. The Toronto Globe also praised Mr. Churchill’s speech. Commenting on that portion of it which referred to Canada’s measures to assist the Mother Country, the paper said that these would impose a heavy obligation on every man and woman, but there could be no thought that Canada was not equal to the faith of the British people in her.—By radio.
