NOTED BOXER

JIM TRACEY’S CAREER Mr. Jim Tracey, the well-known former middle-weight and heavyweight boxer, died in Auckland this week. Born in South Africa of Irish parentage, Tracey went' to Australia, where he had a very successful ring career. He was a sparring partner of the late Les Darcy. Shortly (after the termination of the war, Tracey went to Auckland and he scored a notable victory over Albert Pooley in 13 rounds. This was regarded as being one of the best heavyweight contests ever held in New Zealand. A little later Tracey went 15. rounds at Hamilton with Jimmy Cl'abby, who was recognised as one of the finest middle-weight fighters the world has seen. The match was at catch weights and Clabby won on points. Tracey left for America a few months later and he immediately commanded attention by his showing against Bill Brennan to whom he lost a 12-round contest on points. The latter had just previously made a great showing against Jack Dempsey, who at that time was heavyweight champion of the world. Luis Firpo then challenged Dempsey unsuccessfully. Following this match Tracey was matched against Firpo in the Argentine for a substantial sum of money, the latter proving too strong for his opponent, who weighed about 13st.
