CHAMPION SHEARER
DEATH OF MR. W. HIGGINS (LVr Pross Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The death is announced of Mr. William Higgins, at Karaka Bay, aged 45, the world’s champion shearer. Born at Pahiatua, he was on a shearing board at the age of 14. He made a record tally when 29, being 406 sheep, ewes at that, for a working day of nine hours. The scene was Moumahaki, the sheep RomneyLincolns. The previous year in the same shed he shore 383 in eight hours 45 minutes. A remark is credited to Mr. W. G More, Maxwelltown, where he did 373, that the faster he goes the better he does them. He came to Wellington and became travelling representative for the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Company. He leaves a widow, twC sons and three daughters.
