When he appeared this morning before Messrs. Chas. Matthews and A. A. Fraser, J.P.s, in the Police Court, Fritz Kahlenberg was convicted and fined 10s and costs 10s on a charge of speeding. The borough traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Nowell, prosecuted. Kahlenberg admitted having exceeded the speed limit in Awapuni road owing to a defective speedometer, but denied that he had travelled at a speed of 50 m.p.m. The inspector for the Transport Department, Mr. R. Metcalfe, said that he had followed the defendant’s car at an even distance between Stanley road and the golf; course in Awapuni road and his speed was checked at 50 m.p.h. The assistant traffic inspector for the borough gave' corroborative evidence. The defendant admitted that there was a fault cf 7J miles on his speeiometer, and that he had believed his car to be travelling at only 30 m.p.h. or 3/4 m.p.h. with the fault included. He had been watching the/ inspector in his rear vision mirror and would not have been likely to have flouted j the law knowing himself to be fol-J lowed. The inspector’s car probably] reached 50 m.p.h. while catching upi on him. !
