The Rotterdam correspondent of The Times says that the Hermans announce the gallant Mel garrison, consisting of 4000 men and 52 officers, surrendered. The Hermans also pay tribute to the bearing of the disarmed Warsaw defenders, whose tramping feet make the only sound 1o break the deathlike calm of the mined city.

A Copenhagen message stales that Hen- Hitler is expected to lead the triumphal entry into Warsaw to-morrow. The Reichstag is expected to meet on Friday. The Berlin representative of the Associated Press of Great Britain says that Herr Hitler’s Reichstag speech, which he is believed to have begun writing to-day. will, it is understood, finally offer peace with England and France, failing which a long struggle is deemed certain.

Berlin reports that the Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, left for Rome to-day after a final conversation with the German Foreign Minister, Herr von Ribbentrop, with whom he discussed the European situation. Count Ciano is reporting to 11 Duce. A communique issued in Berlin says that Count Ciano’s visit speaks for itself and interpretation is unnecessary. Rumoured Request to Italy It is rumoured in Rome that Herr Hitler asked Count Ciano to present peace proposals to the Allies and to enter the war if they turned the proposals down. Signor Haydn says that Count Ciano went to Berlin.to discuss the pacts concluded and a clarification of the German political tendencies. The visit was a new phase in the Italian-German move towards peace with justice, which already had been determined in Central Eiirope and some of the Balkan zones. A Moscow message states that 200 Herman experts have arrived at Moscow and arc proceeding to armament factories in the Urals.

Moscow reports that the Turks state their conversations with Russia are likely to continue for several more days. The importance attached to these talks is indicated by the presence of M. Stalin. A Bucharest message says that a report that the Soviet Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, M. Molotov, ordered the Turkish Foreign Minister, Sarajoglu Bey to close the Dardanelles, caused consternation in Rnmania - . -uitfiH

A Soviet broadcast states that Russia is suggesting that Finland and Latvia should conclude pacts similar to the Sovict-Estonian agreement. The Kaunas representative of the British Associated Press says a Herman wireless broadcast stated that Russia had offered Lithuania a non-aggression treaty without military clauses. Lithuania had instructed her representatives to negotiate, on this basis.
