GUNBOAT TRANSFER

CHINA STATION (Reed. Sept. 3, 12 noon) SHANGHAI, Oct. 1. The British naval authorities announce the withdrawal of five of 19 gunboats in view of the urgent military necessity elsewhere , The British Official Wireless Service reports that the Admiralty decided to withdraw from the service on the Yangtse for employment elsewhere several of the gunboats which patrol the river in peace-time. It is not thought justifiable to retain these ships - and their highly-trained crews in China on duties which, however useful, cannot be called essential for the prosecution of the war.
