WIN FOR SPORTS

CENTENNIAL QUEEN

MISS NORMA HENDERSON MARGIN OF 4000 VOTES MAORI NOMINEE SECOND In a total poll of 70,140 votes, cast in the district queen carnival organised in aid of the Poverty Bay and East Coast celebrations funds, Miss Norma Henderson to-day was elected Gisborne’s centennial queen by over 4000 votes. Second place was taken by Miss Wiki Tureia, third by Miss Pat Oakden, and fourth by Miss Peggy Lange.

The details of the voting were:—

Sports candidate, Miss Norma Henderson .. .. .. 23,456 Maori candidate, Miss W. Turiea 18,876 R.S.A. candidate, Miss P. Oakden 17,280 Public Service candidate, Miss P. Lange 9,528 Total votes cast 70,140. Final deposits of funds in the competition were made this morning, and the sports Queen’s committee were

early on the scene with a contribution which placed the nominee in an unassailable position. The Maori committee and the social committee of the Returned Soldiers’ Association also made substantial deposits, but the chief interest was in the competition for second position, the success of Miss Henderson being assured.

The committee of the carnival competition handled more money this morning than during the whole of the earlier campaign, and much satisfaction was expressed regarding the results of a campaign which was carried to completion in the face of a situation decidedly unpropitious for efforts of this kind.

The declaration of the poll was made by Messrs. B. S. Bree, J. Chrisp, F. R. Ball, and I. J. Quigley, members of the queen carnival committee.
