PRAISE FOR TRAMS FOUR CHAMPIONSHIPS ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT A record of four club championships won in a single season, with additional honours gathered at the annual Marist Association tournament, and in minor competitions, provided speakers at the annual smoke concert at the Marist Bros, Old Boys’ Rugby Football Club, held last week, with a topic of exceptional interest to the attendance of 140 players and supporters. The chair was taken by Mr. K. F. .Tones, and among those also present were the Rev. Fathers Fahey, Berridge and Forsman, and Brothers Edwin and Dennis, of the stall' of the Marist Bros.’ School.
After the toast of “The Pope and the King” had been honoured, tire chairman extended the warmest compliments to the members of all teams, pointing out that there were few honours in Rugby which *he club had failed to secure during the season. He referred to the championships gained by tour grade teams, the Brennan Cup victory at the annual tOUrnanVetit/’ and th'e notable 'contributions of the club towards the representative strength of the district, stating that Marist players had laboured long and faithfully for their success, which could not have been achieved without club loyalty as well as ability on the part of the players in all grades. Other toasts honoured during the evening included “Poverty Bay Rugby Union,” proposed by Mr. A. Toye and responded to by Mr. J- E. Mercer; “Marist Brothers”, proposed by the chairman and replied to by Brother Edwin; “The Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association." proposed by Mr. D. Heeney and replied to by Mr. W. Wilkie; “Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr. .1. Shone and replied to by Mr. P. Wall, Old Boys, Mr. W. Morrison, H. 5.0.8., and Mr. H. Airey, Celtic; “Club Executive,” proposed by Brother Dennis and replied to by Mr. I-L Duckworth; “Medical Officers, Ambulance Men, and Press,” proposed by the chairman and replied to by Mr. W. E. Bullivant; and “The Entertainers.” proposed by Mr. W. Hoy and replied to by Mr. R. Sloan.
On behalf of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, Mr., J. E. Mercer carried out the presentation of trophies won by the Marist club during the season just concluded, these including the Brennan Cup, won at tire annual Marist Association tournament, the Senior Cup, for the senior championship, the Junior Cup, the Third Grade Cup, and the Fourth Grade Trophy; and also the Premier and Aggregate Cups. Reference was made by the chairman to the selection of two Marist club junior players, N. Malcon and A. Somers, for the main body draft of the special military force, Mr. Jones extending the congratulations of all club players and supporters to the volunteers, and wishing them a safe return to civilian life after the war.
