Some critical observations on prices in New Zealand were made by a visitor, Dr. J. D. Sinclair, of Darlington, County Durham, in an interview after his return to England recently. “New Zealand is the ideal place to live in,” he said. “If only it had as efficient administration as this country.” The cost of living, he considered, was abnormally high. While labourers could earn as much as £6 a week building magnificent roads, which only tourists and a few natives would use, their good wages were to a large extent neutralised by the high cost of commodities.
