BOOM CONTINUES

GISBORNE BUILDING £48,433 IN TWO MONTHS OVER HALF FOR YEAR HOUSING ACTIVITY The boom in the Gisborne building trade continues, according to building permits issued by the Borough Council. Within two months the council has issued permits for work valued at £48,433. or considerably more than half of the total value of the contract's for the whole of the year to date, the figure for the nine months being £■80,577. Last month’s total was £16,492. September last year was also a 'big month, when £34,831 was reached, the biggest month for many years, but the total for the two months of August and September last year reached only £38,609, approximately £IO,OOO less than the corresponding months of this year. Up to the end of September last year the value of the building work sanctioned was £75,634, compared with £80,577 for the first nine months of this year. Construction of Homes 'The construction of dwellings is still proceeding satisfactorily, the outbreak of the war apparently having no effect on the number of applications for permits. Five permits were granted last month, and apart from six in August it was the biggest, month of the year. Six permits were granted in September, 1938. During the past two months 11 permits were issued for dwellings, the total cost involved being £10,346, while in August and September lasi year eight contracts were sanctioned at a total cost of £9790. The position for all building permits and those for dwellings month by month during the first nine months of the present and past years is tabulated below:— ALL BUILDINGS 1938 1939 No. Value.
