GISBORNE PARK CLUB An exciting final was played during the week-end in the men’s championship of the Gisborne Park Golf Club, F. Do’bbie taking the honours on the thirty-eighth green. The final was between Do'ifbie and S. Duncan and was claimed to be the most exciting in the short history of the club. Conditions were good, despite a tricky north-westerly wind and the slightly holding qualities of the greens. At the end of the morning round Duncan was 2 up on Dobbie, due mainly to a slight superiority of his long game. However, Dobbie was practically counteracting that with his accuracy on the greens. The highlight of the round was the halving of the fifth hole in birdie figures. The afternoon round was followed by a large and enthusiastic gathering. Dobbie steadied up and his shots seldom wavered from the centre of the fairways, gaining very nearly the equivalent length with his strokes. With another delightful birdie at the fifth hole Dobbie squared the match. Steady golf was played to the thirtieth, where Dobbie again holed a ’birdie to obtain the lead for the first time.

Par figures were being played by both men, making it difficult to get a real break of any sort, but a four at the sixteenth gave Duncan the advantage again. A well-played five by Dobbie at the last hole left Duncan struggling with a long putt to save the match. He failed, and the players continued to the thirty-seventh, which was halved. Going up the thirtyeighth Dobbie was short with his second, and Duncan reached the green. An over-played approach by Dobbie looked bad, but he boldly holed a long putt for a bogey. Under pressure, Duncan’s putter failed him, for he took three putts, to give Dobbie the 1939 final, a popular victory. Competition Matches

Saturday’s fourball bogey was won by J. Slipper and A. H. Dow on the recount from J. Murray and J. Haisman, both 2 up. In the Dryland Cup match A. S. Fearnley and J. Broad defeated the holders, G. Montgomery and R'. Wilkins, 2 and 1. The Dryland Cup series has been concluded for the season, A. D. Tarr and F. McDonald being the winners. J. .McMillan and iMrs. Williams defeated A. S. Fearnley and Miss M. Carr, 4 and 3, in the Lunken Cup match. The Brown Gup final produced very even golf between C. -Ward and J.

Murray, Ward winning on the seventeenth green.
