Saving on Material

Some comment has been raised in the main centres by the appearance of infantrymen for the new special military force in uniform trousers which show a decided narrowing of the trouser section below the knee. The official explanation is that as these trousers are to be worn with puttees it is an advantage to have no unnecessary material in the lower section of the leg. Veterans of the Great War will recall that in someunits is was the practice to re-tailor the lines of the uniform trousers, to achieve this effect, known as the “choke-bore.” Some- individuals carried the practice to excess, and though they found much comfort in the results of their handiwork while appearing in puttees, their appearance out of puttees was decidedly unmilitary.
