EMERGENCY PLANS
COUNTRY PREPARATIONS WAIKOHU ORGANISATION FIRST STEP TAKEN COMMITTEE ELECTED (Special to tho Herald.) TE KARAKA, this day. The first steps in organising the district in the event of a state if emergency arising were taken at a public meeting held in Te Karaka last night, when a committee representative of die Waikohu County was elected.
There was a very representative attendance at the meeting, which was presided over by Mr. M. Doyle, a member of the Waikohu County Council, who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the country chairman, Mr. A. A. Fraser.
The objects of the meeting were explained by the county clerk, Mr. J. G. Appleton, who read a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs asking the council to summon a meeting and providing an outline of the requirements for rural districts, based on the relief scheme operating al the time of tho Hawke’s Bay earthquake in 1931.
Allotment of Duties The meeting was asked to appoint a general committee for the purpose of allotting the various phases of the work among sub-committees, each if which would make arrangements for the working of the activities under its control. When an emergency arose, the general committee would meet and decide its nature and the extent to which the organisation would need to be put into operation After the explanation had been, made, the meeting set up a general ccmmittee to organise the scheme in the centres in the county, namely at Te Karaka, Waipaoa, Whatatutu, Matawai and Motu, the committee elected being as follows: Mesdames H. Allan and J. G. Appleton, Misses V. Seamons and L. Ruru, the Rev. J. D. Hodgson, Messrs. T. L. Earnshaw, S. Smithers, ft. N. Grono, A. A. Fraser, P Hardacre, C. Milks, A. G. Lucas, R. D. Dvmock, W. G. Keane, F. M. Clayten, A. W. Clayden, F. J. Figg, and J. G. Appleton, the last-mentioned being appointed convener.
Useful Work
It was pointed out during the discussion that the emergency organisation should be able to do useful work in the event of a big fire or an earthquake, or to receive refugees from the cbastline in the event of a raid. Among the duties to be arranged for were thbse of medical attention, transport, supplies, accommodation, police and information.
MEETING IN NUHAKA WAIROA COUNTY SCHEME {Special to the Herald.) NU'HAKiA, this day. ■Nuhaka residents this week attended a meeting to arrange for co-operation in the Wairoa County emergency precautions scheme. ‘Mr. F. T. Woodley was in the chair.
An explanation of the scheme was given by Mr. P. J. Brewster, who stated that the Nuhaka A. and P. Society had appointed him to attend a meeting in Wairoa, where he had •been asked to secure Nuhaka’s cooperation. Several names were put forward for the various appointments for local organisation, these names to be forwarded to Wairoa, and, on the motion of the chairman, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Brewster for the work he had done.
•At a subsequent meeting of ladies, a ladies’ committee was elected under Mrs. G. D. Tod as chairman, but before any action was taken it was decided to seek the advice of the Minister of Internal Affairs.
PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION TOKOMARU BAY WOMEN (Special to the Herald.) TOKOMARU BAY, this day. A number of the younger people gathered at the residence of Mrs. R. Chaplin recently to discuss the forming of a junior branch of the Womens Patriotic Association in. Tokomaru Bay. The meeting was in favour of this and the following were elected to form a committee: President, Mrs. R. Chaplin; joint secretaries, Misses M Nevin and K. Holliver; committee, Misses M. Corbett, B. Oates, E, Thompson, I. Mackay and L. Glen.
>A register of those who would gi their services was compiled. First aid and borne nursing classes were arranged, and it was decided to hold a jumble sale about the third week m October. _____
