TROOPS FAREWELLED

CLUB FUNCTION HELD OLD BOYS’ RUGBY SEXTET “RIGHT TYPE SELECTED’" To have six of their members, including the captain of the senior team and the club secretary, accepted as members of the Special Military Force recently called up for service is the proud record of the Old Boys’ Football Club. At an informal evening held in the Amateur Athletic Club’s rooms, Derby street, on Thursday evening members of the club held a farewell function in honour of the departing club men.

The Old Boys’ party comprises Lance-Corporal J. F. Forster, Privates W. Aitken, N. Gordon, A. Eastwood, W. Hayden and M. Pascoe. The pride -which the club felt in the honour brought on it by its strong military representation in the volunteer body was voiced by the president, Mr. G. J. Jeune, who said that it was evident that Old Boys’ men could play the game df war with facility equal to that of peace. The men selected were of the right type and would uphold the traditions of the club.

Each of the departing men briefly replied and thanked Mr. Jeune for his kindly remarks and also their fellow members for the compliment paid them by their attendance at the farewell function.

Other Rugby players in the selected

men are Messrs. A. S'omers and N. Malcon, both of the Marist junior team. Mr. I. Bell, of the H. 5.0.8. club, and Mr. J. L. Griffiths, of Tokomaru Bay. The last-mentioned is the famous All Black five-eighth who played for New Zealand in 1034-35-36-38, being captain of the New Zealand team which won both test matches against the Australian team which toured the Dominion in 1036.
