Roadside Beautification
A roadside beautification scheme, involving an initial outlay of £3700 for the whole of Now Zealand and an annual expenditure in upkeep o! about £3OOO, was supported by the South Island Motor Union at the annual conference in .Christchurch. The scheme favoured is along the lines of that drawn up by the Koval New Zealand Institute ot Horticulture. It is proposed that officers he staiioned in each of file four centres and that they should co-operate with local authorities in an improvement scheme, concerned chiefly with the planting of trees and shrubs and the formation of ornamental plots along the main highways. The meeting disregarded a suggestion that all money should be spent on defence, as it was felt the scheme would take some time to complete.
