U.S. SUBMARINES SEEN
CRUISE IN PACIFIC MONTEREY’S EXPERIENCE (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The tough, grjm reality of war was experienced by the Monterey which arrived at Auckland from San Francisco yesterday. While the vessel was travelling from Honolulu to Pago Pago, she sighted two large American submarines which, it transpired, were on a “shake-down” cruise. The vessel also had a record passenger list, every berth being taken and 10 extra beds in the library were necessary. The number was 723, 12 short of the special lifeboat capacity.
