COASTAL TRADE The Karitane arrived at Gisborne last evening from Westport and Greymouth. via Napier, to discharge coal, limber and posts. The motor-vessel completes unloading about Wednesday and then returns to West Coast ports of the South Island. The Pakura readied Gisborne this morning from Lyttelton. ‘Wellington and Napier. She completes discharge and loading here to-night and sans for Waikokopu and Wellington. On Monday and - Tuesday the ship loads at" Wellington for Napier and Gisborne, returning here about Thursday next.' ' • The Wainui left Wellington at 11 p.m. yesterday for Gisborne and is expected to arrive here this evening. The vessel will discharge general cargo from South’ Island ports and Wellington on Monday and will depart Iho same dnv for Napier, thence Wellington and Dunedin. At the last-mentioned port the ship will commence loading again for Gisborne and Napier. The Pukeko was to leave Napier this morning for Wellington, where she will undergo annual overhaul. The Margaret W. was expected to reach Auckland early this morning from Gisborne, via Toiaga Bay. The vessel loads at Auckland on, Tuesday and sails in the evening for Coast bays, Gisborne and Napier. The Kopara left Napier last night for 'Coast bays, Portland and Auckland. The ship loads cement at Portland and general cargo at Auckland, leaving Auckland on Tuesday night for Coast bays, Gisborne and Napier.
TAINUI’S EVENTFUL CAREER Incidents in the eventful career of of the old Shaw, Savill and Albion uassenger steamer Tainui are iccallcd by the announcement of her passing into the hands of die shiporeakers at Home Site was torpedoed by a German submarine during the Great v/ar. -he explosion tearing a hole in the bow of the ship. Captain R. A. Kelly steamed his ship stern foremost -or 80 miles and finally, with the aid o: a tug, managed to beach her in Falmouth harbour. Five years previously she was nearly lost when she was badlv holed in a collision in a dense fog. The vessel managed to reactn Corunna with her bow nearly submerged and after temporary repairs she proceeded .to London. Again m 1924 when leaving Southampton the Tainui struck some submerged object, aft, but proceeded to New Zealand. There was clearly something amiss with her steering and when she was docked at Port Chalmers it was found that the greater part of net rudder had been broken clean oh, and she had steamed for weeks without. it.
GERMAN STEAMER REPORTED The North German Llbycl' steamer Latin, which left Sydney on August 2G without obtaining clearance papers, has arrived at Taloabuano, Sout.i America. ■
