UNDER BRITISH GUIDANCE
DOMINION WAR EFFORT DEFENCE AND INDUSTRY UPPER HOUSE DEBATE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. When the War Expenses Bill was debated in the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon, the Leader of the Council, the Bon. D. Wilson, made it clear that New Zealand's war effort would be made under .'the guidance of Britain and that every effort would be made to supply both men and materials os required.
The Hon. F. Waite declared that too much stress was being placed on the need for essential men in industry. The industries ought to be essential, but no man of military age was essential to industry. He urged the Government to concentrate on securing a division for service and then consider the position of industry.
Tile Hon. T. Bloodworth warned the Government not to send too many men out of the country before being §ure that the defence of the Pacific was sure.
Mr. Wilson said the supply of men for service and production must go hand in hand. New Zealand’s future was bound up with the future of the Empire and the defence 'efforts must be for the Empire as well as for New Zealand. New Zealand would do her part ■ in co-operation and under the guidance of Britain, and Britain would decide where New Zealand troops should serve.
Tile bill was passed. The Wages Protection anfl Contractors’ LiCns Bill Was alto passed.
