Maori Recruits
Sir, —As the eldest granddaughter of Poho-o-Rawiri, Kaiti, and one who saw service overseas during 1914-18 and after the Armistice, may I state that after the battle of Gallipoli the Maori pionee-s were drafted to the “Labour Corp.” This was done by well-meaning military heads to keep them out of the front lines, but it in no way saved the flower of the race from death and injury. In the last war many of our -New Zealand pakehas and Maori rangatiras helped to finance the Pioneers. To-day we have very difficult and different conditions prevailing. Please let our Maori men join up with our pakeha brothers. We demand equal rights in the field of sport, in the labour market, Civil Service and the professions; let us serve as equals be it overseas or here in New Zealand . TAKAPUNA RANGIUIA.
