BRITISH BROADCASTING

CHANGE IN CONTROL SMALLER DIRECTORATE (British Official Wireless.) Reed. Nobn. RUGBY, Sept. 28. The House of Commons will meet again .on Tuesday, when the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain will review the general position. Answering the Leader of the Opposition, Major C. R. Attlee, on the changes recently announced in the control of the British Broadcasting Company, Mr. Chamberlain said that they were of two kinds. First, there was the transfer to the Minister of Information of powers vested in the Postmaster-General. Secondly, there had been a reduction in the number of governors from seven to two in order to ensure the smooth and swift Operation of the broadcasting system in war.

Provision for such a reduction existed in the charter and was in accordance with the agreement reached between the governors and the Government before the outbreak of war.

The new arrangement, Mr. Chamberlain affirmed, did not alter the structure or constitution of the corporation and the interest Of listeners, and the accepted principles of broadcasting would be safeguarded.

In respect to censorship and news, the British Broadcasting Company was in the same position as the press.

In a further answer, the Prime Minister assured Major Attlee that he realised the need to avoid the danger of the British Broadcasting Company becoming subject to bureaucratic control.
