MR. JOHN D. HARRIES

GISBORNE BUSINESSMAN

The death this morning of Mr. John D. Harries removed one who had been a resident of Gisborne for the past 65 years and who had spent more .than half of that time in business in the town.

Born in England 69 years ago, Mr. Harries came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of four years, and settled in Gisborne. Since then, the whole of his life had beeen 6pent in the town, except for a short period in Napier with the firm of Messrs. Hannah and Company, Limited. Following that, Mr, Harries established himself as a boot and shoe importer, and his business was a wellknown one in Gisborne for 35 years until his retirement a few years ago.

His main activity outside his business was in connection with the Bright Street Methodist Church, in which he was an office-bearer for 25 years. During that time he established a unique record for attendance at the church.

Predeceased by his wife seven years ago, Mr. Harries leaves three daughters and two sons to mourn their loss, the family being:—Mrs. L. R. Stiehbury, Gisborne; Mr. R. Heyworth, Hamilton; Mrs. D. G. Lean, Wellington; Messrs. C. A. and L. C Harries, Gisborne.

The funeral will leave the residence Of Mrs. Stiehbury, 209 Clifford street, at 2 p.m. to-morrow, following a short service at 1.45 p.m., for the Taruheru cemetery.

Formerly a prominent Auckland athlete, well-known throughout the province, Mr. Hubert Henry Daere, aged 68, died at Kaitaia on Tuesday. Mr. Dacre was born at Devonport, and was educated at St. John’s College. He entered business as a dentist in Auckland with Dr. A. G. Maitland, and about 20 years ago established his own practice at Mangonui and Kaitaia.

The death has occurred at Maramarua, Waikato, of Mr. James Gray Soppet, who was born in Auckland in 1863. In his youth Mr. Soppet was employed by Shaw, Savill and Albion, Limited, and was a member of the crew that took the first shipment of frozen meat from New Zealand.
