A vessel with unusual and varied duties which has recently run trials in the Firth of Clyde is the survey ship Barbosa, built by Messrs. George Brown and Co. (Marine), Limited, Greenock, for the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company, Limited, London. She is specially designed for attending to the channel into Lake Maracaibo, South America. Her dimensions are 101 ft. b.p. by 23ft. Gin. by 9ft, moulded, and her gross measurement is 193 tons. The Barbosa is fitted with a special cast steel bow piece for hauling in the moorings of the buoys, and she has a 10-ton derrick and a two-ton derrick with a powerful winch for dealing with the buoys. In addition to the above work, she has large freslj water tanks for supplying ships in the port. Altogether there are 11 water and oil-fuel tanks built into the hull. The hold is arranged for the carriage of gas bottles and fittings in connection with her work, including stowage for pipes 22ft, long. The officers’ and crew’s accommodation is all on deck in large comfortable cabins with electric light and fans, and there is also an exceptionally large chartroom for use of the surveyors. The propelling machinery, manufactured by Messrs. Plenty and Son, Newbury, is steam-driven with an oil-fired boiler.
