WORK IN THE COUNTRY

The intention of the Government to place more men on scrub-cutting work in the country as part of a plan to bring greater areas of land into use to increase production, is causing a good deal of comment among a section of the unemployed in Hastings. One of their number was deputised to communicate with the Prime Minister setting out the men’s grievances. Chief among the objections raised by the men is the fact that the scheme entails separation from their families, the necessity, of having to supply their own bedding and cooking utensils while engaged on the work, and the poor returns for their labour.
