Warsaw message introdueing tlie* “twenty-second day of (he siege” stales that "Warsaw endured an unspeakable inferno during the last 24 hours. Bombing by aeroplanes •was almost continuous, and tvas coupled with heavy artillery fire. Incendiary bombs increased the number of lives which were increasingly difficult to combat because of lack of water. Crowds of refugees escaping from burning and destroyed buildings through the bombed streets were killed and wounded by the thousands. Beenes of indescribable misery become the daily routine. “The troops are lighting Avitli marked heroism and •successfully repulsing the enemy.” concludes the message. “Warsaw is being destroyed methodically, one district after another. 'The spirit of the population is unshaken and the heroism wonderful. The city hopes against hope that there will be a. reply to her SOS for assistance, and that she Avill receive ultimate deliverance, so that her sacrifice, unprecedented throughout history, will not have been in vain. The citizens killed in Warsaw since noon on Monday total 2000. Epidemics are feared. Shells destroyed the last standing hospital in the city Avhich was almost razed to the ground. Communications Avithin the city have broken down owing to fires overyAvhore. A Berlin message states that Germany lias ordered the cslablishment of martial law in the German-occupied territories of Boland. General von Runstedf takes charge of the military sphere and Dr. Franck takes control ol the civil adminisl ration. A Moscow message quotes a Soviet broadcast stating that the Russian forces in llm occupied territory in Poland are freeing prisoners indiscriminately in order to find room tor the arrested Polish officers, and the noblemen capitalists and other enemies of 1 lie Soviet regime. Those released paraded in Vilna carrying red banners. Some who bail been imprisoned for Communist activities have been given responsible posts. A report from Paris states that the French artillery and machine-gun fire compelled the Germans to evacuate Suarbnicken.
