HICKS BAY WHARF
GRANT FOR REPAIRS EXTENSIONS DEFEIMIEO £3400 VOTE ON ESTIVATES Restoration of flic concrete wharf and its approaches at Hicks Bay is to be undertaken this season with the aid of a substantial grant from the Government, through the Public Works Department’s estimates. The cost of the work is estimated at £3400, and that amount has been made available, according to advice received by Mr. A. G. Hultquist, M/P. for the Bay of Plenty, from the Minister of Marine, the Hon. P. Fraser. Writing to Mr. Hultquist, the Minister refers to the representations made to him during his visit to the East Coast some months ago on the possibility of extending the wharf at Hicks Bay.
“The original representations made to me concerned the extension of the present wharf for a further 50 or 70ft., to make for the safer berthing o: coastal vessels,” states Mr. Fraser.
“After full inquiry by the Public Works Department it would’ appear that the extension of the wharf at an estimated cost of £6300 is now a secondary consideration, in that the existing concrete wharf and the approaches are in such a state as to reouire urgent repairs at an estimated cost of £3400.
“After full consideration, it has been decided to defer the matter of extension in. the meantime, but I am pleased to be able to advise that the consolidated fund vote of the Public Works Department for the current year will include £3400. which is the estimated cost of putting the present wharf and approaches in a sound condition ”
