STATE HOUSES

PROGRESS IN WAIROA COMPLETION IN SIGHT FOLK READY BEFORE XMAS (Spcciiil to till' lli'i-nlil.) WAIROA. this day. Good progress has been maintained on the erection of Wairoa’s second batch of State houses, numbering 10. and it. is anticipated that four of them, including one double unit, will be ready for occupation before Christmas. The work is being pushed ahead as expeditiously as possible, and it is reported that the whole of the exterior work on the 10 houses has been completed with the exception of the painting. Unlike the first batch of houses, the new buildings have been roofed with coloured tiles on conformity with the State houses in other parts of New Zealand, and the effect is pleasing to the eye. Generally speaking, it can be claimed that the work, has reached an advanced stage. So far there have been no serious hold-ups through lack of material, and the contractor, D. Glengarry. Limited, has had a much better run than was the case in erecting the initial quota of houses, which were handicapped by a great many setbacks, chief of which were the ‘floods of 1938. The exterior painting of the houses was to have begun at the beginning of this week, but this job has been held up on account of the rain. The finishing off of the houses also has been handicapped to a certain extent as a result of tnc difficulty experienced by the ecu tractor . in obtaining the services of good finishing tradesmen. The interior jobs, he stated, by this time would have reached a much more advanced stage had it not been for this fact. He added that at present he could place four or five good interior hands for several months.
