25 CHILDREN FATHERLESS
HUNTLY MINE TRAGEDY THREE MEN STILL .MISSING SEAT OP FIRE FOUND (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, this day. Twenty-five children have been letl fatherless as a result of the Glen Alton coal mine tragedy in which 11 men were overcome by gases. All of the victims were married. Richard Ireland, and Raymond Turley had no children and Christopher Blackburn, had one, William Brown one, William Wilcox, an adult '.family of four, Walter Cole, four, Jack Marshall, two, William Bell, three, William Peden, live, George Hunter, two. James Clarke, two children and one adult daughter. The work of attempting to locate the remaining three bodies, those of Messrs. Ireland, Turley land Bell, was continued throughout the night, but the searchers were unsuccessful. The fire has been located about half a mile from the Glen Alton end and work is proceeding with the sealing of the shaft. This is expected to be completed by midday and, after the fumes have blown out, another attempt to recover the bodies will be made. The inquest on the bodies ol the eight, men recovered was opened before Mr. N. I-I. Freeman, S.M., at 11.30 a.m. this morning and, after evidence of identification had been given by Alexander Johnston, president and secretary of the Glen Alton branch of the Miners’ Union. The proceedings were adjourned sine die.
