Dr. Ivan Wilson, of Palmerston North, has been appointed assistantdirector of medical services at Army Headquarters, Wellington. The Right Rev. T. E. Riddle, moderator of the Presbyterian Church, who left for Australia at the beginning of the month, is returning to Auckland shortly. He will be there for some months before going back to his mission work in the Punjab, India.
Successful Gisborne candidates in the teachers’ certificate examinations held in August were: Ernest Gardner, who has passed now in 10 subjects for the class C certificate, and Ellen Mary Cotter, who passed in one subject for the class C certificate. Major S. F. Allen, area officer at Hamilton and adjutant of the Waikato Mounted Rifles, has been transferred to Trentliam, where lie will take command of the divisional signal corps. Major W. H. Allen, Hamilton, has been called from tlie reserve of officers and will replace Major S. F. Allen.
Lieut-Colonel E. S. Varnham, M.C., vho has been appointed to an important position in the far— being raised in New Zealand for service at home or abroad, is a well-known resident of New Plymouth, where he is manager of the Taranaki Herald. Prior to the Great War Colonel Varnham was a resident of Palmerston North for a brief period. He had lengUiy service overseas and since his return has been actively identified with the territorials.
