Tradesmen for Defence Work
The construction of accommodation at military camps has reached the stage where large numbers of plumbers are needed. The State Placement Service has been approaching private employers asking them to release plumbers from their employ until defence building is completed. It was partly by ' borrowing men from contactors that the Government, was able to assemble without its large force of carpenters. Many workers used to handling timber in other trades are now engaged as carpenters on Army contracts. Among such recruits are motor body builders, whose industry has been adversely affected through the reduction of motor car importations.
