PRESIDENT'S LETTER The following letter has been sent by Mrs. R. H. Wicksteed, president of tiie Poverty Bay Federation, of Women’s Institutes, to all members:— "Dear Fellow Members, "The time has come for us to think deeply of those words we so often say —‘Let us be large in thought, word, and deed’—large in our prayers and thanksgiving; large in our hopes and sympathy for all in sad-stricken Europe; large in our deeds of help, comfort and generosity, and remember it is all the little things that count and help to give us big things. “As an organisation we are being asked to do big things, so remain organised by holding your regular meetings and keeping in touch with one ,another and with your headquarters. Now is the time to stand united and firm, and with Cod’s help build our kingdom sure and lasting." POROURANGI
The Porourangi institute held its August meeting at Te Horo on September (>. In the absence of the president, Mrs. D. George presided. In the competitions, Mrs. Matanuku was the only competitor to gain first place in all three sections, socks, fruit cake and flowers. The hostesses provided luncheon, which was enjoyed by all. WAINGAKE The monthly meeting of the Waingake institute was held on September 14. there being a good attendance. An interesting article on a trip to Mexico was read. Mrs. Gibson conducted an amusing telegram competition. The best article in a display for a sales table was a duchess set. The best bloom exhibited was a ranunculi. Afternoon tea and social chat concluded a happy meeting. rongomaitApui An enjoyable afternoon was spent at the home of Mrs. Emma Maaka on September 17. when the Rongomaitapui Women's Institute held its meeting. Luncheon was served to the members. It was decided that the institute should have collection boxes for the Red Cross fund. Winners of -the monthly competitions were.—String work: Mrs. W. Ngatai, 1; Mrs. R. Bristowe, 2; Mrs. Hoeraia an;d Mrs. Puha, 3. Sauce: Mrs. W. Ngatai, 1; Mrs. Hoerara, 2; Mrs. Bustone and Mrs. Puha, 3. MGTU-MQTUHORA There was a fair attendance at the September meeting of the MotuMotuhora Women’s Institute, which was presided over by Mrs. A. E. Le’gge. The roll-call, “A short talk oh a famous man of to-day,” was excellently responded to. Arrangements were made for members’ day, which is to be held next meeting. The monthly competition, bowl of spring bulbs, resulted: Mrs. W. Stewart, 1; Mrs. ft. S. Fisher, 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mrs. N. G. Nisbett and Miss M. Fisher. KOPUAWHARA The monthly meeting of the Kopuawbara institute was held in the Y.M.C.A. hall. No. 3 camp, on September 7. There was a fair attendance. An interesting article on travel in London was read by Mrs. White. A demonstration of honeycomb work was given 'by Mrs. Cummings. The competitions resulted.—Shortbread biscuits: Mrs. Hilliard. 1; Mrs. Doyle, 2. Best bloom: Mrs. Stewart, 1. Knitted tea cosy: Mrs. Aylwood, 1; Mrs. Stewart. 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdanies White and Hilliard.
RAKAUROA There was a .small attendance at the monthly meeting of the Rakauron Institute. The competition, bowl of spring flowers, was won by Mrs. W E. Shaw. A picture in water colours by an ex-school teacher, was presented to the Institute and hung in the room. Each member will contribute Christmas gifts to the lepers. WIGAN There was a small attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Wigan Institute held in the Takapau Hall. It Was decided .to begin by knitting socks, scarves and sewing to be sent abroad if needed. The Institute is indebted to Mrs. Craill for making the Institute banner which she displayed at the meeting. It is a wonderful piece of handwork and lias been sent to the Centennial Exhibition. The competition for the afternoon was won by Mrs. Craill. TUAI The Tuai institute held its monthly meeting on September 13, there being a good attendance of members. Mrs. C. Dawson gave a demonstration of making a looped crochet coat hanger, and was accorded a vote of thanks. An amusing paper competition was won by Mrs. Godman, Mrs. McDougal being runner-up. Results of competitions were: —'Sponge cake: Mrs. McDonald, 1. Best thrift article: Mrs. Bumstead, 1; Mrs. Burgis and Mrs. C. Dawson, equal, 2, Best bloom: Mrs. Godman, 1; Mrs. Dunstan, 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Higgs, McDougal, Burgis and Blair. WHAKAKI The September meeting of the Whakaki Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, September 20, Mrs. Piilfold presiding. Several letters' .were read by the secretary, Mrs. S. Smith, including one from the Dominion federation regarding preparations for the emergency of evacuation of cities. Mrs. Sam Smith and Mrs. J. Wilson were appointed delegates to the council meeting in October. Mrs. Hill demonstrated the cutting of paper patterns on the cross and tfie making of woollen flowers. Winners of competitions were:— Guest towel. —Mrs. P. Smith, 1; Mesdames W. Smith, and S. Kahukura, 2 M:rs. C. Hook, 4. Shortbread—Mrs. ft. Wilson, 1; Mrs. Sam Smith, 2; Mrs. J. Wilson, 3. Bloom.—Mrs. J. Wilson, 1; Mrs. Pinfold, 2; Miss Bates, 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Fisher and BroughtonWAEREN GA-A-HIKA There was a good attendance at the September meeting of the Waerenga-a-hika institute, over which Mrs. O’Connell presided. Members were asked to bring Christmas gifts for the Makogai lepers to the next meeting. Proceeds from the trades table were contributed to the Poverty Bay Women’s institute Federation in aid of the national emergency fund, and it was also decided to hold a “bring and buy” each month for this purpose. Much information, was gained from Mrs. A. F. Hall’s interesting talk regarding the aims- and objects of the Creche.
