MAORI BEAT PAKEHA COMBINATION AND SPEED lIEP. TEAM’S FAILURE FOOD, EVEN GAME Maoris 2 goals Fake has 1 Hockey critics had all theid ideas of form upset on the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday, when the Maori representative team defeated a side representing the Europeans by two goats to one. The result was surprising in that tire European team was practically the original representative selection to play Auckland for the New Zealand Challenge Shield in a game that was to have taken place last Saturday, until the outbreak of the war’ caused the abandonment of the fixture. There was only one player in the European team who did not secure a position in a Poverty Bay representative team this year, and he was a former representative who was ill during the greater part of the season. The Maoris were vastly superior in speed and in combined effort. They scored their two goals early in the first half.'P. and T. Smiler being responsible. Slade scored the European goal shortly after. Four Sinners The success of the Maori team was all the more notable for the fact that the choice of players was limited to only two teams, while some of those who were on the field were taking up a stick for the first time this season. More than one-third of flic team was composed of Smilcrs, four of the family being in the side. W. Smiler was one of the most active of the forwards, while Halbert played the steadiest of the half games, with Tupara again the mainstay of the backs. Ruru made a very effective goalkeeper. On the European., side, the forwards did not combine as well as they might have done, the efforts of Watchman and Wheatley, though successful in penetrating, did not bear full effect, because they were usually lonehanded. Nicol was tile best of the halves, while Scholium played a great full-back game.
EXCITING WOMEN’S GAME NAPIER'S ONE-GOAL WIN Napier .... 5 goals Kia. Toa ‘5 An exciting game was played on Saturday between the Napier ladies’ club and Kia Toa, the former eventually winning by the odd goal in a high-scoring match. In the early stages it seemed as though the visitors would win by a substantial margin, for they did not take long to rattle on three goals, while Kia Toa failed to score until shortly before halt-lime, the tally at the interval being 3-2 in favour of Napier. The home side drew level shortly after the resumption and equalised again after Napier had scored their fourth goal. Napier secured the winning score shortly before time, the game ending 5—4. For Napier, Mrs. McPherson scored three, goals and Misses Peterson and Callaghan one each, while for Kia Toa the scorers were Mrs. Le Bas, Misses Harrison. Whitehead and Single.
