SEASON CLOSED
GISBORNE BASKETBALL OLD GIRLS’ PREMIER CUP B TITLE TO ST. MARY’S Spirited games were witnessed on the final day of the Poverty Bay Basketball Association’s 1939 season on Saturday. The matches brought no marked changes in the positions of the teams on the points table and the premier championship cup was lifted by High School Old Girls Al, with Tuis close runners-up.
To have defeated every other team in the B grade twice was the proud record of the undefeated St. Mary’s B 1 team, which annexed the title in that grade. St. Mary’s clu’o scored a further success in the C grade, which was finished last month.
For a time in the closing stages of the game between Huia and St. Mary’s A on Saturday it seemed as if the Huia players could not play a wrong shot. Despite the fact that their opponents had four of this year’s representative players in their team, Huia had the satisfaction of turning the tables on St. Mary’s in a game which was decided by a substantial margin. On the last occasion that these teams met St. Mary’s won by 26 ''goals to 10. High School had a day out in the B grade, winning their three matches which were characterised by keen play.
