MANUFACTURING CENTRE

GISBORNE EFFORTS ADVANTAGES OF DISTRICT At a recent' meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce the possibilities and potential advantages of Gisborne as a manufacturing centre were fully discussed and subsequently the advantages of the district as a centre for manufacturing expansion were brought to the notice of manufacturers' organisations in other centres.

As an outcome of the action taken by the Chamber of Commerce Mr. A. W. Nisbet, secretary of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association, is visiting Gisborne for the dual purpose of making a personal survey of the district’s possibilities and' establishing a local 'branch of the Manufacturers’ Association. "A distinct trend towards decentralisation is .already noticeable in the maid centres,” said Mr. Nis'bet in an interview this rtVorriing. “Several large Wellington factories, instead of enlarging ‘ their Wellington premises, have opened branch factories in ebuntry centres such as Levin and Palmerston North', thus tapping a fresh supply of female labour, the shortage of vVhich constitutes a' bottle neck in many, factories and which in turn, precludes the employment of additional male labour.”

..•flffr. Nisbet, who is a member of the Emergency Industrial Council appointed last week by the Minister of Labour fo deal with all industrial i matters during the war, will address Gisborne manufacturers and business meri at a meeting on Wednesday evening. Mr. Nisbet will deal with the many problems affecting manufacturers to-day, with particular reference to the erhetgency regulations and the fhh’ctions of the price controller, the controller Of factory production, and the Emergency Industrial Council.
