SERVICE OVERSEAS
AUPOURI TRIBE WILLING SPOKESMAN’S STATEMENT A statement on behalf of the Aupouri tribe dissociating them from a resolution opposing conscription, which was passed by a meeting of leaders of the Maori race in North Auckland on September 11. has been forwarded by the Aupouri spokesman, Mr. Hemi Manuera. The resolution favoured the enlistment of members of the Maori race for home defence, and suggested the formation of a Maori battalion.
Mr. Manuera said he had sent a message to the Government expressing the Aupouris’ loyalty and willingness to help in any way. That offer included service overseas. He furtner expressed the opinion that it would be a waste of time and money to train and equip men who would refuse to go overseas is asked to do so. “I presume the time will come when it will be ascertained that no danger of attack or invasion threatens our shores,” the letter continued. ‘‘The best defence then will be service overseas.” 1
