Messages from Bucharest state that Rumania awoke virtually under a military dictatorship and the country i= still fearing serious repercussions as a result ot the assassination of the Prime Minister, M. Calinescu. The country, however, is quite and there is no immediate indication that the Government is unable to handle the situation.

If is revealed that nine of the assassins were blindfolded and shot one by one with the same pistols as were used against M. Calinescu while crowds looked on. There were hundreds of arrests overnight and many more are expected.

The Bucharest correspondent of the Associated Press recalls that thousands of people have been in concentration camps throughout the year, as a result of M. Calinescu’s decrees. It is stated that mass executions are continuing among these.

A German wireless message professes heartfelt relief that the Government has stamped out the murderers and prevented the spread oi' trouble which might have affected the country's neutrality. The Berlin official news agency states that the Rumanian Government has made a clean sweep of the last members of the Iron Guard, executing them throughout Rumania as a reprisal for the assassination of M. Calinescus Order is claimed to have been restored.

It is reported from Washington that the United States Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, has sent a message of condolence to the Rumanian Foreign Minister, M. Gafencu, expressing the deepest sympathy in the death of M. Calinescu.
