CLOSE TO REVOLT
CONDITIONS IN GERMANY CONFLICT RALLIES NATION WAR OF SELF-DEFENCE PERSUASION OF NAZIS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Pross Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 23, 10.18 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 22.
The New York Sun, one of the leading afternoon newspapers, prints an interesting dispatch from its Paris correspondent stating that an American businessman who had been in Germany since the beginning of tbe war lias left with the feeling that a revolution would have broken out in Germany in the ensuing winter if Herr Hitler’s invasion of Poland had not kindled temporary enthusiasm.
The ousinessman said that the last week in August he got an. immediate impression that the country was on the verge of an upheaval. Criticism and dissatisfaction with the Hitler regime was widespread. The people seemed to take it for granted that the collapse of the regime was imminent, but a clever propaganda campaign quickly persuaded everybody that it was England who began the war for Imperialistic purposes, with the result that popular sympathy immediately rallied, Herr Hitler unifying the nation in the sincere belief that the Germans made war in self defence. Thoughtful people, however, fear that Russia may employ the opportunity to spread Communism all over Europe when the combatants are exhausted.
