PERSONAL
Dr. R. S. R. Francis, medical superintendent of the Otaki Sanatorium, who has been engaged in post-gradu-ate study in Britain and Europe, has curtailed his visit and is expected to return to New Zealand in about a month
Close personal friends of Major A. Blackburn gathered last evening to tender him an. informal farewell on the eve of his taking up his appointment with the Special New Zealand Military Force. Several speakers referred to Major Blackburn’s long connection with the volunteer forces, and to his early training ot the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and also to the personal qualities which they considered marked him for military preferment in the event of the force being sent on active service abroad. Replying to the many complimentary speeches, the guest referred to the considerations which had weighed with the commissioned and non-com-missioned officers of territorial units in this district—the majority of them married men—in their decision to offer their services at once, and added that while the future employment of the force was uncertain, they had all felt that there was a job to be done, which those who were qualified by training should be the first to take up.
