Last Night’s Forecast General Situation: An extensive depression is centred a short distance to the west of the Dominion, while another is developing near Norfolk Island. An intense anti-cyclone covers 'eastern Australia. Forecast: Winds, moderate to strong north-easterly in the far north and/ south-easterly in the far south; elsewhere moderate and rather variable but freshening southerlies later advancing from the south. Seas: In New Zealand waters, rough about Foveaux Strait and becoming rough about the Auckland Peninsula; otherwise mainly moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong north-east to northerly winds in the central and northern portions, but a change to southerly advancing from the south and west; seas, becoming rough. Weather: Further rain probable in the South Island, and rain gradually spreading over most of the Dominion; some heavy falls likely, but conditions later improving from the southwest. Temperatures: Becoming colder with the southerly change, and snow prbbable on the higher levels. To-Day’s North Island Report At most points along the East Coast the barometric pressure showed a marked rise, but at Auckland and Cape Maria Van Diemen there was u pronounced drop in the pressure. The level of the barometer at Gisborne was moderately high. Light rain fell at a number of points overnight and overcast or cloudy conditions were reported by all, except Tauranga and East Cape. The winds were variable and a strong northerly was blowing at Cape Maria Van Diemen. Elsewhere the winds were light. Cape Maria Van Diemen was the only station that reported a rough .sea. The temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Opdtiki, 58 degrees, Auckland, Tauranga and Gisborne, 57, Wellington, 58, and Napier, 45. Midday Forecast General situation. —Anticyclones are located to the east and west, but a depression centred near Cape Maria van Dieman is moving to the North Island. Forecast. —Light but freshening easterly to southerly winds. Weather becoming unsettled, with rain, probably developing. Temperatures cooler to-morrow. Seas, slight but rising.
