JAYOLA TO BE SPELLED STILL VERY LAME NOMINATIONS FOR TI.B. CLOSIN'*.! DATE MONDAY By “Trenton” The four-year-old gelding Jayola, who went amiss while contesting the cup on the first day of the Avondale meeting, is still at Ellerslie. He is very lame and will need a lengthy spell before he will be ready to stand another preparation. tVas Solidly Supported There was a lot of money invested on Gold Vaals in the Plumpton Handicap on the concluding day of the nvondale meeting, but he never looked a winner at any stage of the contest. All going well in the interim, Gold Vaals will compete in the Poland Cup at the Ohinemu-ri meeting to-day week. He may do oetter on the country course, where ne has previously been successful. A Reminder Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for both days of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting close on Monday next, September 25, at 8 p.m., with the secretary, Mr. A. E. Wishart, Hastings. Halley in Work Halley, who received a nasty knock just prior to the Duke of Gloucester Cup, has made a good recovery ana is now a regular track worker at Hastings. Improved Horse Sternchase is another Hastings horse that is doing all that is being asked of him. He will be an improved horse this season and is expected to more than pay his way. .Cetiicd to Stud Ruling Spi, a winner of the Douro Cup, has been retired to the stud and will be mated with Phaleron Bay. improvement Expected Brunhild is working better at Hast.ugs at present than for a long time past, and may be a better prospect this term.
nteresling Foaling
The imported English mare Florilege, by the Derby winner Felsteaa from Florene, by another Derby winner, Captain Cuttle, has foaled a brown filly to Lang Bian and is on a visit to Phaleron Bay at the Grange Stud, Westmere. It is interesting to note that Florilege was covered in England by Lang Bian, who is now n New Zealand at Hawke’s Bay stud. Some great racehorses have been produced in this manner, and one outstanding instance was provided by Martian (Martagon Otterden). Lochiel, sensational New Zealand Cup winner 50 years ago, was another. Catalini, dam of Catalogue, was sired in England and l'oaled in New Zealand. Pennon (Coriander —Eulogy) also came out to the Dominion in utero.
Clip of the Com Beau Vite is to be ridden by M. McCarten in the A.J.C. Derby. This was decided by the toss of a com. Beau Vite’s owner, Mr. R. Stewart, although wanting to be loyal to the New Zealand jockey, A. E. Ellis, considered that McCarten’s more intimate knowledge of Australian courses and conditions would be a factor in the running of the Derby. Beau Vite is now the ruling favourite, his fine race n the Chelmsford Stakes, in which he was beaten by Defaulter by the barest of margins, bringing him into favour. At Trentham H. Rama is now quartered at Trentham, where he has Tooley Street looking very well. Tooley Street will probably be given a race at one of the small meetings before competing at Trentham next month. . An Improved Jumper The novice jumper Molvanui was schooled over four flights of hurdles at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning and gave an improved showing. With the pace that he possesses, Melvanui w:l. only need to jump correctly in order to compete successfully against the moderate class of hurdlers racing at the present time. Will Do Belter When Greek Queen ran third in the Henderson Handicap at Avondale last Saturday she did not have the best of luck in the early part of the race. A feature of her performance was the resolute manner in which she was running on at the finish, and an early win looks assured for her. Greek Queen will contest hack sprint events at the Ohinernuri meeting at the end of the month.
Has the Ability When Bisquit accounted for the opposition in the Kingsland Hurdles on the first day of the Avondale meeting he was only making his second appearance as a hurdler. He gave a bold display of jumping, and taken all round his effort was very encouraging. On the second day, in the Grey Lynn Hurdles, in which the journey extended to a mile and threequarters, Bisquit weakened over the final stages. Nevertheless, he ran a good race for a comparative novice. As far as jumping ability is concerned Bisquit compares very favourably with the majority of the hurdlers in commission . in the Auckland province.
