AMATEUR TALENT

“CINGALEE” season GOING WITH A SWING LAST NIGHT’S SUCCESS « Amateur players of the Gisborne Operatic Society gave their fourth public performance of "The Cingalee in the Opera House last evening before a substantial and appreciative audience, the members of which saw the production in the full swing of success. The cast and the members of ballet and chorus all showed the polishing effect of the season, and many of the minor defects noted in connection with the earlier performances were no longer apparent. Confidence and the knowledge that their efforts were ‘being warmly appreciated had an influence in last night's success. Every song number, every ballet, and every dialogue episode was applauded, and the audience enjoyed almost uproariously the succession of humorous episodes which make up the story of the Cingalee girl’s courtship by a young English tea-planter tend her escape from the clutches of her arrogant ana powerful betrothed. Miss Eircnc Halbert was again very appealing as the Cingalee, Nauoya. whose love for the Hon. Hany Vereker (Mr. Stan. Vincent) end her childhood engagement to the Boobhamba (Mr. W. G. Bignell) provide the chief theme of the piny. Messrs Vincent and Bignell were excellent in their respective parts, as were Miss O Chambers as Lady Patricia Vorekoi Mrs. V. I-lale as Peggy Sabine, Mr. W j. Sinclair as Sir Peter Loftus, Mr Will B. Keany as Chnmbuddy Ram Mr. C. V. Harre ns Bobby Warren, and the several players who filled minai parts. Once again the orchestral work contributed greatly to the success of the presentation, and the stage management was of a high order. The production will continue this evening and to-morrow, when the season will close.
