CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RAIL SERVICE TO WAIROA P R OPOSED AERO DR OME (Special to lliu Iloruld.) WAIROA, this day. “The work carried on by the Associated Chambers’ executive during the year has been up to the usual high standard, and the council has no hesitation in testifying to the value of the organisation in acting as a watchdog over the interests of the commercial community,” stated the president of the Wniroa Chamber of Commerce, Mr. S. M. Ashburn, in his report presented at the annual meeting.
“The year has brought many difficult and unusual problems for the businessman,” added the president. “The Associated Chambers and its organisation does valuable work in interpreting to the Government the viewpoint of those engaged in private industry and commerce. “The council,” he continued, “has dealt with many matters of interest during the year and reports that satisfactory arrangements are being made in connection with the purchase of a site lor the construction of an aerodrome for Wairoa. The local bodies concerned are to be congratulated on the manner in which they have given their support to the controlling body, the Wairoa Harbour Board. Public Facilities “It is pleasing to see that the Post and Telegraph Department has installed at the corner of Paul street and Marine parade a much needed telephone box. Also, that the Main Highways Board is taking the necessary steps to erect permanent bridges m place of those destroyed by the 1938 floods. Improvements to the Morere hot baths for invalids are also welcome. Further activity in the district is the Tuai power scheme and the prospecting for oil. During the year die annual commercial examinations were successfully conducted. “Among other matters dealt with during the year which will icquiro the attention of the incoming council,” stated the president, ”1 would mention particularly the matter ol night schools. These, will prove a great acquisition to the town and I appeal to all those interested to give their support so that something can be done for the younger generation of the town. I would also mention the periodical hosing of Marine parade and improvement of the Napicr-Wat-roa main i.ighway. ‘The most outstanding feature oi the year,” concluded the president, “was the completion of the NapierWairoa section of the East Coast railway. ‘The opening of this railway will be of invaluable assistance to the district, particularly to fanners and business people. At the official opening of the railway, representatives of this chamber and the Napier and Gisborne chambers were in attendance. These chambers have been instrumental in bringing about the finality of the railway and look forward to the completion m the near future of the Gisborne section.
