TO SMASH TANKS

BRITAIN'S WONDER GUN

A RMO ITR - PIER Cl NG SH ELLS

Capable of firing armour-piercing shells at any range up to 1000 yards, Britain’s new two-pounder anti-tank gun is a notable addition to our arms, states the military correspondent of the News of the World. It is a high-velocity weapon which is far more mobile than the heavier guns, and will therefore be of great value in checking the advance of tanks careering over open country in daytime.

A demonstration at Aldershot revealed that, at the extreme range, the gun could smash tallies which had no men inside but which were advancing under electrical control. This should not be taken to indicate that the day of the tank is over, for the display was undertaken in circumstances most favourable to the new gun. The tanks were not firing back as they would in real war, their advance was not being covered by field guns and long range rifle fire, and no smoke screen was employed to mask the attack. The new gun would not be of the same use in a night attack, and there are many circumstances in which the tank c:m still be relied on to put infantry to flight.
