MR. JOHN MAHONEY
LIFE IN PRINTING TRADE
The death last night of Mr. John Mahoney, removed one who had spent most of his life in the printing trade.
Born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, 69 years ago, lie spent his early life on his father’s farm, later becoming apprenticed to the printing trade in Melbourne. Coming to New Zealand more than 40 years ago, Mr. Mahoney followed his trade in Wellington, and came to Gisborne 30 years ago. For a time he controlled the Te Rau College printing press, and then took up a farm at Te Aral. Later, he was a member of the Herald staff, with Which he was associated for a number of years before his declining health compelled him to retire 21 years ago.
From his earliest association with New Zealand, Mr. Mahoney became interested in the Maori language and customs, and this was extended while he was in control of the Te Rail College press. He was a keen bowling enthusiast, being a member of the Kahutia club for many years, and as a keen chess player was a member of the Gisborne Chess club. His sporting interests also included cricket in his younger days. He is survived by his widow, two sons and two daughters, the family comprising Messrs. Clive and Victor Mahoney, both of whom are in Australia, Miss Molly Mahoney, Gisborne, and Mrs. R. Ivess, Gisborne.
The interment will take place at the Taruheru cemetery to-morrow afternoon, the funeral leaving his late residence, 158 Whitaker street, at 2.30 o’clock.
