NATURAL SUPPLIES \Y 11 AND ARE I SUE 0 ESTIoN In view of the necessity for conserving the supply of petrol in New Zealand, the Whangarei Commercial Vehicle Owners' Association decided to ask the Government to amend the Mining Act by the elimination of the £IOOO license fee required for prospecting for natural gas. Gas is known to exist in large quantities and of good quality throughout Now Zealand, and it is considered this could be prospected and developed. If commercial and private motor vehicles could use natural gas it would eliminate the use of petrol, said Mr. S. C. Crawford, chairman, at a meeting of the association. There was enough natural gas, he said, in both the North and the South Islands for all the motor vehicles in the country. He knew of places in North Auckland where the gas was obtainable. Motor vehicles required little mechanical adjustment to make the change-over from petrol to natural gas. A number of commercial vehicles in Whangarei already had been converted to producer gas, but natural gas was superior to producer gas for motor vehicles.
