CONTROL OF SCHOOLS

STAFFS AND PUPILS 11, B. EDUCATION BOARD MILITARY, CAMP TRAINING The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, held yesterday in Napier, dealt with the business of schools control under ,he shadow of war, and members had constantly in mind the effect which the outbreak of hostilities might have upon the staffing of schools and the general conduct of the board’s business. Only one o?. the letters, however, dealt directly with the relation of teachers to military training, and that had reference to territorial iorces.

In, this letter, the Department of Education pointed out that up to the present military leave had been restricted to very short periods, but from requests made' recently by the Army Department, it was evident that longer periods would be required in some cases of commissioned officers. The course of training might be as long as three months, and the department had compiled conditions upon which leave might be granted in such cases. The letter was received.

Approval for the appointment of an additional assistant -at the Gisborne Central School, to conduct classes at the Poverty Bay Health Camp, was given by the department in another letter. The department also approved the appointment of an additional for the infant department of the Opoutama School for the third term of the year. Mihiwhetu School

Authority for preparation of working plans and specifications for the replacement of the Mihiwhetu School near Tolaga Bay, recently destroyed by fire, was received from the department. The board pointed out that such delay as had occurred in replacing the school was not due to its actions, the original sketch plans having been sent back by the department with instructions that the teacher's room be deleted. The board was authorised to renew its contract for the conveyance of children from the Kanakanaia road to the Te Karaka District High Scffool for three years, providing the contractor provides a new bus with a capacity of 40 children. The secretary was instructed to arrange accordingly. An intimation that Miss J. B. Cattenach, Te Po'hue, had been chosen for exchange with an English teacher for 1940 was received from the department. The board decided, however, that no exchanges should be made during the war, and the department and teacher are to be notified accordingly. The head teacher of Tikiwhata reported on the case of a pupil whose parent had kept him from school, and the truant officer was instructed to take action, against the parent. A married woman teacher in the East Coast area applied for leave to seek another teaching position, so that she could be nearer to her husband, who is also teaching in another part of the district. The board declined the permission asked for. Use of Uawa Domain Objections on- the part of the Uawa Domain Board and the Tolaga Bay Golf Club to the use of part of the domain for school purposes were considered by the -board, and the chairman reported that he had written for additional -particulars in regard to possible sites for the new school in the township. The chairman’s action was approved. The department approved the appointment of Mrs. K. Wade as a temporary instructress in shorthand and typewriting for the third term at the Wairoa District High School. The board approved a grant of £35 for the purchase of a new motormower for the Te Karaka District High School grounds, to replace one which the committee bought some years ago.

The exchange restrictions having been invoked, the department advised that the board’s order for maps and globes for use in schools, at a cost of £lB7, could not be placed at present.
