BRITISH ATTACKS SEARCH FOR SUPPLY SHIPS SURVIVORS REACH PORT SUBMARINES STAND BY CREW CHEER GERMANS ** (Reed. Sept. 16, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 15. The Ministry of Information states: "A number of German submarines have been destroyed by British destroyers and aeroplanes.” It is reported in Paris that British and French light cruiser and destroyer squadrons have started a widespread systematic search for freighters and tankers mothering enemy submarines. Survivors of the British Influence, a tanker of 8431 tons, were picked up by the Norwegian steamer Idabaake. Patrick Walsh, a member of the crew of the tanker British Influence, has reached Cork. He said that the submarine commander was a perfect gentleman.

The submarine stood by for five hours. It called the attention of the s.s. Idabaake, and remained until all the crew were picked up. Reciprocal Cheers

“When ,we were aboard,” Walsh added, “we gave him three cheers. The submarine’s crew reciprocated.

“Our ship was hit after we put off. and sank in 20 minutes.” On the Vancouver City, announced yesterday as being torpedoed, three of the crew were killed. The remaining 30 took to the boats, and were rescued by a Dutch tanker. A message from Hamilton (Ontario) guotes the Premier of Ontario, Mr. Mitchell Hepburn, as asserting: ‘‘The world’s jury finds Herr Hitler guilty of murder.” Mr. Hepburn has asked the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. W. L Mackenzie King, to order flags to be flown at half-mast for Margaret Hayworthy, aged 10 years, the Canadian girl who died of injuries as a result of the torpedoing of the Athenia.
