EXCUSE REVIVED
GERMAN FRIGHTFULNESS TERRORISING CIVILIANS WARNING BY HALIFAX LONDON PRESS REMINDERS (Elcc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 15, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 14. The Polish Embassy, in a statement, says that the Germans have systematically and ruthlessly bombed open towns since the invasion of Poland began. It detailed a list of 30 places which have 'been bombed since September 3, and added that during the last two days the Germans began the methodical bombing of towns far from the battle zone, this barbarity paralysing the life of the country.
Speaking in the House of Lords, the Foreign Secretary, Viscount Halifax, delivered a stern, warning to Germany that if the German High Command carried out the threat of a campaign of frightfulness with the bombing of Polish villages and hamlets, Britain •‘would hold herself free to meet it with appropriate retaliatory action.”
The Times and the Daily Telegraph give a lead in editorial condemnation of the German proclamation, to bomb open towns and villages in Poland on the ground that civilians arc adopting the role of franc-tireurs (irregularsharpshooters).
The papers point out that some of the worst German crimes in Belgium in. 1914 were perpetrated with the same thinly-veiled excuse and commend the reference in the House of Lords to reciprocal measures.
