RATIONING OF PETROL
IN DOMINION’S INTEREST MAXIMUM SUPPLY GOVERNMENT’S INTENTION i (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day.
Though general dissatisfaction has been expressed by members of the Wellington Automobile Association with the fiat rate allocation of 10 gallons of petrol a month for private cars, said the president, Mr. E. A. Batt, to-day, he was satisfied, after having ascertained details of the position, that the steps taken by the Government were in the best interests of the Dominion.
The controller of oil fuel, Mr. G. L. Laurcnson, had emphasised the desire of the Government to return to normal conditions in petrol supply as soon as possible and, in the mean‘ime,‘said Mr. Batt, the finest cooperation that motorists could give was by the continued acceptance of the necessary restrictions.
Mr. Batt said that the controller, when interviewed, had explained that 'he English scheme of allowance on the horse-power system was considered, but it had been found that to put it into operation would have caused a delay of at least two weeks and, meantime, the private car owner would not have been able to obtain any supplies whatever.
“We have received an assurance (hat the Government will take all the tops possible to make available to consumers the maximum quantity of pe’rol possible consistent with the building up of adequate reserve stores,” added Mr. Batt.
