A motion that the Wairoa Harbour Board be requested to communicate with the military authorities with a view to ascertaining if the proposed establishment of an aerodrome for the Wairoa district was urgent or essential at present, and if not then the board would defer the.matter for 12 months, was passed at tlie monthly meeting of the Wairoa County Council yesterday. Cr. D. V. Thomas, stated .that some of the ratepayers were objecting to the fact that no poll was being taken in connection with the raising of the £IO,OOO loan and there was also some objection to the cost.
A statement that the ratepayers in his district were wondering what the aerodrome was for was made by Cr. J O'Grady. They were not consulted. and the first they heard about it was when they got their rate demands.
"I can assure you that if an aerodrome in Wairoa is not necessary then there will be no Government subsidy forthcoming,” stated the chairman, Cr. A. T. Carroll.
Cr. H. Bayly. pointed out that the Napier Harbour Board had been given authority to raise another loan of £130,000 for its harbour works. The chairman in replying stated that harbour works were a different matter. They were vital from a shipping point of view.
